Discuss the desperation that characterizes Amelio's portrait of contemporary Albanian migration to Italy. How do scenes of immigration in Lamerica compare with cinematic representations of leisure travel to Italy?
Lamerica provides a new insight into travel in Italy, portraying Italy as a land of not only dreams and adventure but also hardships. In cinematic representations of leisure travel to Italy, everything in Italy seems like a rosy dream; Lucy in A Room with a View finds true love and freedom; the Princess in Roman Holiday runs away and instead of being harassed by reporters manages to make one fall in love with her. In Lamerica, however, shows that traveling for life in Italy is dark and bleak. People are harshly treated and are in such bad conditions that even young dies.
I agree that the film provides a new perspective to travel to Italy, contrary to the carefree utopia already presented in class. Instead of following the lives of wealthy Europeans, the film portrays the lives of struggling Albanian immigrants. In order to develop a true sense of Italy, it is important to consider both depictions.
ReplyDeleteI like how you say that Lamerica provides us with a different part of traveling to Italy. This filmed showed us the hardships that the Albanian people had to go through compared to the other 2 films where their problems were more related to their personal freedom.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you wrote your blog. It is very concise and I agree with your point. In Lamerica, the scene is much more realistic and brutal while in the other two films the scenes are much more ideal and romantic.
